Tips on Painting a Room

Muhammad Azmi

Painting a room on your own can save you a great deal of money. It is often more affordable to pick up the paint and tools needed at a local hardware store and jump into the task yourself than to hire a painter at an hourly rate. There are some tips you should adhere to when painting a room. They will help you to do a satisfactory job without creating any unnecessary mess or damage.

It is important to get everything ready for the room before you begin painting. Remove the furniture from the room, or place it in the center of the room. Make sure you can properly walk around any items left in the room. Having little space can result in damaging the items. Place painter's tape along the baseboards and ceiling to prevent paint from getting to these areas. Lay a plastic drop cloth on the floor to avoid damages associated with dripping.

Additional preparation for the room needs to include removing all outlets and light switch covers. Replace the screws into their holes to avoid losing any hardware during the process. Also, take down any frames from the walls. Wash each wall with a damp cloth to remove cobwebs, dust, and any other particles that may become evident through the paint. Fix any holes and cracks in the wall prior to painting in order for the walls, as the new paint will not mask these blemishes. Also, doors may be removed, as it is typically easier than trying to paint around them.

Bring all painting supplies inside the room with you. A bucket of paint, paint tray, a roller, and a couple of brushes should be sufficient in getting the job done. Open and stir the paint before pouring a good amount into the tray. You may wish to line the tray by placing it inside a plastic grocery bag. This will make clean up easier.

Determining what type of brushes and rollers to use when painting is important. For the large portions of the room, a roller is suitable. Be sure to cover the entire roll in paint and remove most of the excess before applying to the wall. Paint with the roller in a up and down motion. Be careful not to get too much paint on one area, as it can appear darker than the rest of the room later. Smaller brushes should be used just above the baseboards, at the ceiling, and to cover the corners of the room.

It is often better to paint a room yourself than to pay someone else to do it. Even if you've never painted a wall, it is a job that can easily be done with the correct preparation and actions. These are among the most common tips on painting a room.
