How To Create And Make Your Own Costume Designs

Clifford S. Magno

You have often gone to a clothing store and gasps at the price of a simple outfit. You think to yourself that it would be so easy to make the outfit yourself. Well, the same goes for costumes, because costumes are the same as clothes - just more decorative! The next time you are in need of a costume, you can make your own costume designs.

Costume Designs Begin with a Simple Sketch

All you need to get your costume designs that much closer to being an actual costume is a pencil and a piece of paper. Start sketching various ideas you might have, and experiment with different color contrasts. For the coloring part, the ideal materials to use are colored pencils.

Once you have a costume design that you are especially happy with, the next step is to get your measurements. Make sure you measure your arms, legs, neck, head (for a hat) torso, waist, and hips. Of course, if your costume design is rather straightforward, you might not need so many measurements.

The next step is perhaps the most precise, and the most interesting. Go to your local fabric store and select the bolts of cloth that you would like to incorporate into your costume design. The next step is to have each bolt of cloth cut so that you have the necessary yards of fabric that you need. If you are unsure of this step, ask the person cutting the fabric for their advice.

Once you have all the fabric measured out, the next step is to sew it. Make sure that you have a sewing machine for this purpose. Take you time stitching each piece, so that you do not have any loose threads or bunched up material.

All of the pieces of the costume having been sewn together, the next step is to try on your costume. You will need an extra person nearby if you get stuck in the costume for any reason. If you feel comfortable in the costume, then you are all done. However, if parts of the costume are too tight, spend some extra time doing alternations.

If you would like more information on various designs, simply search the internet. The various costume websites that are available will give you ideas. Also, there are some sites that sell costume patterns for a nominal fee. With the proper research, you are sure to make a costume that is beautiful and comfortable.
