Tawdry Shops and Touts on the Street

Jane Nelson

For every traveler there is, expect a travel expert to be close by. Every person who goes abroad discovers travel tips by the time they return. These have been organized, with the cooperation of some travel advisers from a major airline, for first time travelers and those with a limited budget. Having been proven to work, expect to save money and reduce worries with these.

When you arrive at your destination, change $5 or $10 into the local currency for tipping and taxi fare to get you into your hotel. Almost all major airports have a foreign exchange counter. Change a small amount of money into the local currency. Sometimes, the money cannot easily be changed back to U.S. dollars. Keep currency transactions official, stay away from street people even if they have higher rates. Illegal counterfeit money is what you may be given. When converting your money, count everything afterwards, also take note of the official exchange rate.

You can ride an accredited cab or coach to go to the hotel. Hotel travel via cab is much faster, but the coach option is cheaper. Cab fare becomes an extravagant expense if you are traveling by yourself. Try to steer clear from unauthorized cabs. Any charges may cost higher in this case.

In the Far East, beware of tourist nappers, unscrupulous cabbies who get you into their cab, then tell you that your hotel has no rooms available. Third rate hotels pay cabbies to bring tourists to their establishments, and this is where you may end up. Much nonsense will come from these cabbies, they will tell you how you hotel was closed down for some reason and so on.

Check the inclusions of your hotel rates you check in, it may already cover the service charge, taxes, and breakfast as most European hotels do. When you need certain information, you can rely on the concierge to help you out. He will take care of your needs so it is only proper that you tip him well.

A hotel may already include the service charge in the room rate, you no longer need to tip people when you check out. Should you find the need to tip a staff member for a favor or service you have been offered, you can do so. A person need not provide a tip for every service done by staff members like having a suit washed and pressed. In most hotels they work on a rotation system which produces tips for, both the pickup and delivery service.

Soap and washcloths may be items travelers will need to supply. Expecting more tips, maids intentionally fail to supply bathrooms with certain items so that guests will place a request for them. Get your own soap and washcloth so that you do not have to deal with this situation. Leading restaurants may add a service charge to your bill, be aware of this when you eat out and do not be so generous with the tips. From your total food charges, 10 to 15 percent is added for the service charge. You should make a reservation at the restaurant you plan to visit. Expect to pay a fee if you want to use American made toilet articles in some locations abroad.

Always pass up the people who advertise different stores while on the streets. Not only are the products poor in quality but the touts also receive a cut per sale. In countries where bargaining is a normal activity, do not hesitate to ask for a discount. Avoid waiting until you check out to ask the hotel for a copy of your room statement. Should there be any mistakes, you have time to correct them.
