Employee Productivity Affected By Internet Abuse

Article Submitter

For most of my adult life I ran my own business. While I had my own business I would work 10 to 12 hours straight, not even stopping for lunch. That was the only way I could be sure that all the work would get done.

It was quite a shock to me when I started my first job working for someone else. I had expected that for the most part, my fellow co-workers would spend their time working. However, I was amazed at the amount of time my they spent not working. Some of this time was spent on personal phone calls and chatting with friends, but most of the wasted time was spent on the internet.

It seemed to be the usual thing for someone to arrive at work, check their personal email, spend some time on their social networking, and then do some random web surfing before they got down to work. This little ritual was repeated after scheduled breaks and lunch. I was amazed at how much time at work was spent not working.

It turns out that my experience was not unusual. According to a survey done by salary.com, most employees admit to wasting an average of 2 hours out of every 8 hour work day. Most of this wasted time is spent on the internet, costing employers thousands of dollars in lost productivity.

Employers do expect that some time will be wasted. They admit that it is not reasonable for employees to be working 100% of the time. However, employers on the survey estimated that their employees were wasting around 1 hour per day, not the two or more the employees admitted!

In this tough economy employers need their employees to be productive. With the widespread popularity of social networking, employers need to take proactive steps to insure that their employees are not spending more time on FaceBook than on work! Software that monitors employee computer use has been found to be an effective way for employers to be sure that their employees spend more time working, and less time surfing the web.
