Water as it Passes through Sewage Treatments

Natasha Cornwell

What we hear a lot about pertains to sewage treatments but it does not strike our interest. What the term sewage does for me is make me think about turtles of teen age that have a pizza fetish, can perform martial arts really well, and lives in the sewers. I'm pretty sure none of that can be correctly correlated to sewage systems.

To first understand what sewage treatments are, we must first enquire about sewage treatment plants as that is where the handling happens. A factory where odds and ends are processed is referred to as a plant and chances are everyone is familiar with this concept. When it comes to commercial and domestic waste water being cleaned up, this happens in a sewage treatment plant.

This definition does not include the treatment of agricultural, heavily industrial, radioactive water from the corresponding sources, though. It is possible for water to be made cleaner than usual but when most liquids go through sewage treatments they still are unfit for drinking. We are able to get consumable water faster in this case as the natural cleansing process of nature is accelerated.

When it comes to sewage treatments, there are the primary, secondary, and tertiary parts. Handled in the primary process are the easily discernable waste products in the water. Here, the included products are trash material that can be raked, rocks and grits that can be strained, and fats and oils that can be skimmed from the surface.

Taking place is a decrease in the biological level of contamination in the waste water considering the secondary stage in sewage treatments. What experts say is that this stage is the important part in determining the kind of sewage treatment the water undergoes. Able to take place in this stage are four different kinds of treatments.

As part of the removal of organic material and denitrification, biological aerated filters using a medium suspended in solution or attached to a layer of gravel at the bottom of the tank go to work. Filter beds, on the other hand, put the sewage in a tank over a bed certain lime stones that promote microorganism growth by feeding on the organic matter in the sewage. Such microorganisms are consumed by worms and similar fauna.

Rotating disks are used by placing the effective component on the face of a disk. This is followed by a slow rotation in the tank exposing it to the air and providing supplementary oxygen that the active microorganisms need in order to work. Normally, surface aerators are used in this stage when it comes to sewage treatment types that avail of open tanks so that a proper environment is created for the growth of microorganisms.

So that still existing sediments will be able to settle, waste water is left in a tank in the second stage. When it comes to the third stage, the treated water is introduced to natural bodies of water. Taking this process into consideration, some may say that the practice is not that safe but you can rest assured that the water that gets back into the environment is safe enough.

With regard to stage four, it happens outside the plant where the dilution of the treated waste water in the rivers and lakes is the last stage. It will take time for the water to return to its naturally clean state where it will be safe for consumption again. We now can go on with the cycle to open our faucets and flush water down the drains.

When they help alleviate the burdens of the environment, sewage treatments for me are very much necessary. Water treatment plants are doing their share in providing clean safe water for the world population. United, we can contribute in helping Mother Earth in our own little ways.
