Effective Ways to Make Your Home Comfortable

Tom Razor

The most effective way to make your home more comfortable is to control its temperature by installing a proper insulation system. With insulation, the cracks and gaps in the walls are sealed, so external heat cannot enter the house. Insulating also helps to retain warmth during the winter months, keeping the rooms warm and cozy.

If your house is not properly insulated, your will need various cooling and heating equipment such as room heaters, air conditioners, etc. Instead of these, choosing to have your home insulated can minimize the need for these electrical devices. With insulation, not only will you make your home environment comfortable, but you will also see a considerable reduction in your utility bills. Insulation also acts as a sound absorber and keeps noise levels down inside the house.

Attic insulation and floor insulation are the two important areas in home insulation. The attic is a major place in the house which requires insulation. Heat enters mostly from the attic area, hence the need to insulate it to prevent heat from penetrating the house from the roof top. With adequate insulation, the gaps in the attic section can be properly sealed. The greatest benefit of attic insulation is keeping the rooms warm in winter and the house much cooler in the summer months.

By insulating the floor, you can prevent heat from escaping to the ground underneath. The floorboards are lifted and mineral wool is laid between the joists and adequate support is provided, to insulate the floors. The gaps between the floorboards and the skirting boards can also be covered with silicon tube sealant for insulation.

Insulation is measured according to R values, also called "Thermal resistance". It signifies resistance to the transmission of heat. A high R value indicates greater insulating effectiveness. R values of thermal insulation is determined by the type of material used for the insulation, on its density and thickness. In the case of a multi layered installation, the R value of the different layers are added. When you decide to add more insulation to your home, you increase its R value and resistance to transmission of heat.

There are four categories of insulation: loose fill, blankets (batts and rolls), rigid foam and liquid foam. Blankets and loose fill are usually used between floor joists, between roof rafters, in attics. Liquid foam is mostly used to seal air gaps or in wall cavities. Rigid foam is usually applied for external insulation.

There are several factors you should consider when selecting insulation for your home: the raw materials used in the insulation and its recycled content, its long term performance, environmental impact from the production of the insulation material, and the health impact to your family and the installers.
