History of Christianity H22 - The Book of Thomas

Going back to the Book of Thomas which was dated to 52 A.D., so we’re talking mid first century and we’re talking during the time that the apostles, many of them still walked on the Earth, certainly many of the disciples and the Christian movement was just getting started. And amongst the semantic Christians, they were referring to this book of Thomas. And I want to quote to you from it once again, and what Jesus is telling his disciples, “The one who knows himself, you’ll be called the one who knows himself.”

There’s an emphasis on this, “For he who has not known himself has known nothing.” He who has not known himself knows nothing. So Jesus is making a very strong point, I think, that the central theme of this teaching is to look within and to know thyself. That’s yoga by any other name. In the Book of Thomas, Jesus says: “For he who has not known himself has known nothing, but he who has known himself has at the same time already achieved knowledge about the depth of the all.” So self-realization is God realization and that’s the path you’re on right now.

My friends, for many years some church authorities have held that we should not read or study these scriptures, but I believe they are absolutely wrong. Please take the time to see for yourself. If it was good enough for those who actually heard Jesus, why should we not read and study it too?
