What's The Truth Behind The Craze For Chocolates?

Greg Pierce

One of the candies that many of us love are Belgian chocolates. People from all around the world love this treat because of its sweet, unique and creamy taste.

There have been many chocolate myths circulating like:

1. Chocolates can cause acne. You've probably heard this when you were in high school. How do you feel when you are enjoying eating that sumptuous chocolate when all of a sudden you hear a voice that says it's not good for you? Even up to now, chocolates are believed to be a trigger for pimple breakouts. But studies have been made for years and the result clearly says that chocolates do not cause acne. Acne can be acquired because of genetic predisposition or personal hygiene (oily skin and the high presence of bacteria) but not because of eating chocolates.

2. Eating chocolates can cause obesity. Whatever food you eat, when you don't practice moderation, you will surely become fat. This is especially true to those who love eating a lot but don't exercise regularly. It's not that chocolates you make you fat but it is the inactivity or the number of calories your body can burn versus the calories you take in that matters. Whatever you eat, always remember to eat in moderation. An average chocolate bar contains only 220 calories.

3. When you give chocolates to kids, he becomes fidgety or restless. This belief is totally untrue as evidenced by the studies by researchers.

4. There is caffeine in chocolates. Chocolates have theobromine which is less powerful compared to caffeine. Chocolates do contain caffeine but the content is very small and is comparable to that of a cup of decaffeinated coffee.

5. Chocolates can destroy your teeth It is actually not the chocolate that can cause cavities but it is the sugar content in the chocolate. Any sweet food can cause cavities and this does not exclude chocolate. So, the next time you eat a bar of chocolate, be sure to brush your teeth or use mouthwash to avoid plaque build up.

Chocolates, long ago, were connected with love potions, medicinal drinks and beauty enhancements. This candy has been used by princesses, queens and the very wealthy as part of their beauty regimen, especially during bed time when it is given as a beauty enhancer. But now that chocolate myths have been busted, go ahead and grab that bar of chocolate without guilt and savor its bittersweet goodness.

Everyone should have the freedom to eat whatever they want. This is, after all, a free country. But remember to always eat in moderation. Pure chocolates are not factors that facilitate heart disease. In fact, chocolates can reduce cholesterol because of its high levels of cocoa butter.
